Questions to ask
1. Are your technicians EPA Section 608 certified, and is the company licensed for HVAC work here?
Why it matters: Handling refrigerants legally requires EPA certification. Company licensing (where required) and tech credentials are baseline filters before you discuss equipment.
2. Will you perform a Manual J load calculation before recommending a new system size?
Why it matters: Oversized and undersized systems waste energy and fail early. A real load calculation (not a rule of thumb based on square footage alone) shows they design for your house, not a catalog default.
3. Is this a repair recommendation or a replacement — and what would make repair the better choice?
Why it matters: Honest techs can explain remaining life, repair cost vs. unit age, and refrigerant phase-outs. Pressure to replace immediately without options is a warning sign.
4. What SEER2 / AFUE / HSPF2 rating are you proposing, and how does it affect rebates and operating cost?
Why it matters: Efficiency ratings affect monthly bills and eligibility for utility rebates or tax credits. Ask for estimated operating-cost differences, not just the sticker price of the unit.
5. Who manufactures the equipment, who installs it, and who honors the warranty?
Why it matters: Manufacturer warranties often require registered installation by a qualified contractor. Clarify labor warranty length separately from the parts warranty.
6. What does your maintenance plan include, and what happens if I decline it?
Why it matters: Some warranties require annual maintenance. Understand filter changes, coil cleaning, what “tune-up” actually covers, and whether declining a plan voids labor coverage.
7. How long will the install take, and will you need to modify ductwork or electrical?
Why it matters: Duct redesign, new breakers, or condensate drains can add cost and days. Get those line items upfront so the “cheap” unit quote doesn’t explode mid-job.
8. Do you pull permits and schedule inspections, and is that in the quote?
Why it matters: Many jurisdictions require permits for system replacement. Skipping inspection can create problems at resale and may void insurance coverage after a related claim.
9. What is your policy if the new system does not heat or cool evenly after install?
Why it matters: Commissioning matters. Ask how they measure airflow, refrigerant charge, and what remediation they offer if rooms stay uncomfortable after the job.
10. Can I see a written scope that lists model numbers, thermostat type, and disposal of the old unit?
Why it matters: Model numbers lock in what you are buying. Disposal fees, thermostat upgrades, and surge protection should not appear as surprises on the final invoice.
Red flags
- Quotes a new system size without visiting or measuring the home.
- Cannot explain why repair is not viable beyond “it’s old.”
- No mention of load calculation, duct condition, or airflow.
- High-pressure same-day “discount expires tonight” tactics.
- Unclear who provides warranty service after install.
- Asks you to pay cash and skip the invoice “for a discount.”
Next-step checklist
- Get written quotes from at least two HVAC companies with model numbers listed.
- Ask each to show or summarize their Manual J (or equivalent) sizing approach.
- Check for utility rebates and federal/state tax credits before signing.
- Confirm permit and inspection responsibility in the contract.
- Schedule a follow-up commissioning visit if rooms feel uneven after install.
- Keep the installation packet, warranty registrations, and maintenance records.
